Day 17

Throat gets dry and sore by the end of the day. Swallowing doesn't hurt. Yawning still hurts. Sneezing doesn't hurt anymore but is different than when I had tonsils (snot is more likely to fly to be exact.)  Coughed a lot last night from the scabs. Some light bleeding this morning. Making progress.

Day 15

Throat feels very dry today and sore as if I had been coughing a lot. Eating and swallowing are easy. Sometimes my throat hurts more than usual after eating. Yawning still hurts! The scabs continue to shrink. Had a long chat on the phone tonight and felt a little hoarse afterwards.

Day 14

This is supposed to be the magical day. My scabs are still intact but they continue to shrink. Talking too much hurts but it is much easier. Eating/swallowing is pretty easy now. Still not quite ready for chips and salsa or steak though. Yawning still hurts. I can blow my nose without pain. Reaching my back teeth with my tongue is still painful. My throat feels dry a lot and I have been carrying around Biotene spray and mints. I will be able to eat and enjoy s traditional Thanksgiving meal :)

Day 13

Scabs are still causing a lot of irritation and coughing. It hurts after talking for awile. Was able to eat pizza for dinner without much discomfort. Took a nap after being out and about, still get tired easily.

Day 12

I can't tell if I have a viral cough or if it is the scabs irritating my throat. Speaking is easier now. Swallowing food still stings but is also much easier. Don't need the pain meds to function anymore. 1/2 of a percocet to help me sleep. Ear pain is still an issue.

Hmmm, I thought I tasted some blood. Hoping scabs are gone by Thanksgiving.

Day 11

Not a lot of pain today except after eating a burger for the first time in 11 days. A little too ambitious. The scabs are making me cough. I can feel one is starting to peel off so it is very irritating!  One of the better days in regard to pain.

Throat looks a little angry compared to how it feels today.

Day 10

Getting better. Hurts less to talk and swallow. Taking a half percocet when in pain and as needed so I am making some progress. My husband and child are both sick with colds, one with a cough. I have been wearing a mask to try to avoid getting sick. Getting a cold and/or cough would be so miserable right now!

Looking a little frothy but I have had an overflow of saliva for days now. The scabs seem to be wearing off a little more each day.

Day 9

I slept for 6 hours in a row last night! Since my tonsillectomy i have only been able to sleep 2-4 hours at a time.I slept the day away today. Went out to dinner tonight and was able to enjoy terriaki chicken cut into tiny bites, rice, vegetable tempura and miso soup. I took a percocet before dinner and put some Anbesol on the back of my tongue. I had chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. Chocolate unfortunately stings. I have lost 9 lbs since 11/14/13.

Less pain today :) The scabs in my throat sometimes make me cough. I had hiccups today, not fun.

Day 8

Not the best day. Couldn't sleep last night. The scabs are making me cough. Felt run down and irritable all day. Had a little mashed sweet potato for lunch. Gatorade stings. Had braised zucchini am d caesar salad for dinner. Both were SO yummy! Tried a pumpkin cupcake smashed in vanilla ice cream and had seconds. Didn't make me phlegmier than usual. Uh oh, the weightloss might stop! Hurts to talk and swallow.

Day 7

Today started out rough with sharp ear pain, throat and tongue pain and even tooth pain which was new. I was able to eat a scrambled egg this morning. Thee pain lessened throughout the day. I went 4 hours without a percocet this evening which is great progress! I was able to eat a slice of pizza tonight, slowly in tiny bits. Ice packs on my neck help tremendously with pain when I have to wait for the percocet to kick in. Anbesol on the back sides of my tongue helps as well and coats my throat each time I swallow. Still producing a lot of saliva. After sleeping, my mouth tastes and smells of burned dead tissue. Tonight I spit up a little blood so I drank ice cold water and applied ice packs to my neck. Talking is still painful and difficult. Swallowing warm things has become much easier than cold things.

Day 6

The same. Wake up with throat and ear pain and a horrible taste in my mouth. Today I tried cooking banana with honey and peanutbutter but it tasted strange and the peanutbutter stung. Slept most of the day. Had mac & cheese for dinner and key lime pie. The pie made my throat hurt but it was good! Lots of saliva all day and night. The crystal cave appearance of my throat are the scabs and the horrible taste and smell. Pretty gross. Once they fall off things are supposed to get better. Percocet and ice packs on my neck make the pain go away. Feel very tired tonight. Talking was very difficult today.

Day 5

This was a good day. As usual, I woke up in a lot of throat and ear pain and the back sides of my tongue hurt. My mouth tasted like decay and I felt very light-headed. After brushing my teeth and tongue, I took a percocet and forced myself to drink some Ensure.

Later in the morning, after my next percocet, I made a pancake. I smashed the pancake up with butter and syrup + some water. It tasted really good!! I have found that waiting for the percocet to kick in before eating makes it much more pleasant. The main issue is that percocet on an empty stomach can make you nauseous.

I had another mashed pancake for lunch. For dinner I got some hot and sour soup from Panda Express. When followed by sips of cold green tea with honey, it was amazing! It didn't sting but then Panda Express makes a mild hot and sour soup.

So far I have lost 4 lbs.

Looks nasty but notice my uvula is no longer swollen. I think that is why swallowing was less agonizing today. I seem to be snoring less than I did the first few days after surgery.

Tip: have a spit cup handy. Better than having to swallow the saliva overflow.

Day 4

Day 4

I have my alarm set for every 3 hours so that I can keep up on the pain. I woke up at 5am today and had no pain. I was delightfully surprised but took my percocet anyway. I set my alarm for 8:30am and was in horrible pain when I awoke. My ears hurt, my throat ached and felt raw. The taste in my mouth was rotting flesh. The white is where my tonsils were burned out of my throat. I also have pain on the back sides of my tongue. Anbesol and Cepacol both help. I took my percocet, brushed my teeth and grabbed some ice packs for under my jaw/neck. Kurt brought me some ice water and within an hour I was feeling good again. I took a shower, ate some applesauce and a popsicle and took a nap.

The biggest breakthrough of the day was baking a sweet potato, mashing it with butter and water. It was amazing!! I did some laundry after that and am ready to nap again.

Day 3

Eww, looks a little worse each day, no wonder I am in so much pain!  I was taking a percocet once every 4 hours but am now taking it once every 3. I had a small amount of chicken broth for lunch today with a saltine soaked in it. It was good. I am hungry but swallowing is much worse than hunger so far. I am forcing myself to drink water since hydration is extremely important. Cold applesauce is my favorite. Cepacol throat lozenges are helping. After the percocet kicks in, I have about an hour where I feel good. That is the best time to shower, throw in a load of laundry, eat an applesauce, feed the cat, and update the blog  etc.

Day 2

DAY 2

Swallowing hurts more than yesterday. Had Ensure this morning. Nap time. The percocet knocks me out!

6pm: it hurts to talk and swallow, more so than day 1. Today the back sides of my tongue hurt. The Ensure made me feel too phlemgy.  My routine today was: take a percocet, after it kicks in I have an applesauce, popsicle, and drink a bunch of water. I then have an hour to get things done or watch tv, then I am overwhelmingly tired and sleep for about 3 hours. Buddy the cat has been a very cuddley companion ♡
Buddy the cat. He has a great belly!

Some friends sent me flowers :)

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

My daughter downloaded an APP, text to talk, on my phone for me last night. This way if I can't talk, or if it is too painful, I can easily communicate. Love that kid!!!!

Pre-Op Appointment

Today was my pre-op Tonsillectomy appointment. Both the nurse and doctor once again explained the agonizing recovery process. The older you are, the worse it is. I was given my
Pain medication prescription to fill before surgery day, Thursday.
